Lynn Watanabe was born and spent her young age in Tokyo. When she was sixteen, her family moved to the Bay Area. She attended California State University – Hayward where she majored in Biology emphasized in microbiology. Upon graduation she worked as a microbiologist. Later moving to the Napa Valley she found the wine industry.
Her first winery job was at Beringer Winery then to Clos du Val where she learned her wine making skills from their winemakers, the French way. Wanting to have experience in larger winery she moved on to Sutter Home. She left there as a winemaker, technical service with management skill and knowledge of the importance of high standards and quality in business. To expand her winemaking methods, she joined the Napa Wine Company, as a laboratory manager where she utilizes her talent and ability. As she works along many of the outstanding client winemakers, she started establishing in her mind how she would make wine. In 2008, she became the winemaker for Oakville Winery using the winery’s Pelissa vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel. This was the opportunity to pursue her theory of winemaking.
Lynn’s description of being a winemaker is that she is the matchmaker of fruit and microorganisms to bring out the best expression of the given fruit. The main characters of this balance are always the fruit and the yeast. She states that she is always the supporting actor of wine to shine.
When her children were young, most of time outside the winery was spent with her children participating in sports practices and tournament events. Her current interests include scuba diving trips with her husband, gardening, growing orchids and making crafty items.
